Governor Deval Patrick meets with members of the Haitian community to commemorate Haiti Earthquake Remembrance Month.

By Patrick D. Rosso, Town Correspondent

Governor Deval Patrick joined members of the Haitian community Monday morning at the State House to commemorate the two-year anniversary of the Haitian Earthquake.

Patrick delivered a proclamation to Marjorie Brunache, an official with the Haitian Consulate here, declaring Jan. 12--Feb. 11 Haiti Earthquake Remembrance Month.

“Two years ago, the people of Haiti were struck by an earthquake, which was also felt here in our vibrant Haitian-American community,” Patrick said in a statement. “We were all challenged by this natural disaster to rise to the occasion and today we re-commit ourselves to supporting the nation of Haiti and its community in the Commonwealth.”

The earthquake that struck Jan. 12, 2010, caused more than 250,000 deaths, and a number of state agencies were deployed in the aftermath to address the needs to those affected.

Last year, according to the state, the Massachusetts National Guard deployed the 125th battalion of Worcester and the 220th detachment of Bridgewater to Haiti to help bring fresh water to the needy.
