Henry Nelson, President of the Bunker Hill Community College Student Government Association, has won the prestigious Dean Sullivan Award from the Community College Student Life Association, a statewide group representing the 15 Massachusetts Community Colleges.

The award recognizes a student with outstanding achievements as a volunteer leader. This is the third time a BHCC student has won this award, which is named for Richard Sullivan, a retired Cape Cod Community College dean known for his exuberant support of students.

A native of Haiti now living in Somerville, Massachusetts, Nelson was elected president of the Student Government Association in the spring of 2009.

Nelson has also been president of the BHCC Haitian Club, a cultural ambassador and a student mentor. He is studying medical radiography and plans to continue his healthcare career in the Boston area.

Paul Moda, BHCC Student Activities Coordinator, said that Nelson has played an important leadership role at Bunker Hill Community College.

"Power and effectiveness as a leader come not from separate, discrete achievements but rather from the big-picture, global impact of all he does," Moda said.

Henry can be honored for the energy and charisma he has brought to the entire College. His accomplishments represent lessons for students and staff members alike.
