An apology long overdue to Haitians, Haitian-Americans and others who reject the idea of advocating a genocide

As demanded in a November 17, 2003 press release, an apology to what, beyond dispute, makes advocating a genocide, which according to the statues of the United Nations' International War Crimes Tribunal, refers to "acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a nation, ethnical, racial, or religious groups," against Haitians and Haitian-Americans, came yesterday from Mr. Sam Houser, the president of the New York City-based Rockstar Games, the maker of "Grand Theft Auto": Vice City's video game, "Kill all the Haitians, they are all drug dealers."

The decision of Mr. Houser to also say he will edit the remark of genocidal and racist nature out of future copies of AGrand Theft Auto: Vice City@ is enormously significant for Haitians, Haitian-Americans and others who reject the idea of advocating a genocide.

While we accept the apology, however, must we say that it would be a sensible idea for Mr. Houser to now prove that he means what he says by recalling the video game from retailers. This, would in itself be a perfect refutation of the idea of him and his firm advocating a genocide and racism.

An extremely racist, anti-Haitian video game, "kill all the Haitians, they are all drug dealers," that must be condemned by all who reject the idea of advocating a genocide

What, beyond dispute, makes advocating a genocide, which, according to the statues of the United Nations= International War Crimes Tribunal, refers to Aacts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a nation, ethnical, racial, or religious groups,@ against Haitians and Haitian-Americans? An extremely racist and anti-Haitian video game, AKill all the Haitians, they are all drug dealers.@

What, for example, will one visualize while playing the New York City-based Rocktar Games, the maker of AGrand Theft Auto@: Vice City= video game (an extremely racist video game) of Adolf Hitler nature? Why not, too, of Ku Klux Klan (KKK) nature?

  • "My mission in the game is to kill the Haitians."

  • "That's right, kill the Haitians."

  • "I hate these Haitians. We'll take them out, we'll take these Haitians down."

  • "Wipe them out."

  • "Stinking nest of Haitians. We gonna kill them all. Kill all the Haitians."

  • "Shoot them in the head."

How worrying is the video game, which portrays Haitians and Haitian-Americans as evil drug dealers and that they must all be exterminated?

Some mindless people, some crazy people will most likely invoke the video game=s bloody images and extremely racist messages to, in turn, cause brutal death to visit an incalculable number of Haitians and Haitian-Americans - in the comfort of their private residences, in public parks and on the premises of an educational institution, to name only these ones.

In between the two extremes of ignoring the video game and condemning it, Haitians and Haitian-Americans have opted for the latter. And there are as many explanations for what lies at the root of their decision as there are demands for the video game to be recalled, and permanently so, from retailers and a public apology from Rockstar Games= president, Sam Houser.

AThis is unacceptable; this is outrageous; to be sure, we are determined not to let ourselves be dehumanized, be the object of derision and persecution of racism nature.@

Yet AIf there is one lesson long learned it is not to let ourselves be killed like beasts, even when we are in a sea of killers.@

To top it all, AExtermination of the Haitian people, extermination of the Haitian people, extermination of the Haitian people, for sure will cease to be the mantra of Rockstar Games and its racist president, Houser, as they both seem to be now spending an inordinate amount of time quibbling Hitler=s Holocaust (more than six million innocent citizens of Jewish heritage sadly perished) files to best learn how to exterminate the whole of the Haitian populace.@

Hopefully, as Rockstar Games and its extremely dangerous, bigot and rapacious president, Houser, will be searching for an acceptable way out of the racial charges they have invited they may reflect on the physician=s maxim: Afirst do not harm,@ as their graphically violent, racist and anti-Haitian video game (estimates are that Rockstar Games has already generated $260 million from AVice City@ in its first year of release) suggests.@

*Note: The disgraceful, racist treatment meted out to Haitians and Haitian-Americans by Rockstar Games has prompted professor Yves A.
